What's the best tablet for games?

We’ve always had an ipad but there are so many alternatives out there I was wondering if this was still the best buy? Our kids love the ipad (a bit too much) so i wanted to get them one of their own. Ipads are pretty pricey so was thinking of getting a second hand one or a galaxy or kindle fire? It’s just for fun so need to be sure there’s lots of games available for it. Preferably free games!!!
